As we get older, sleep often changes. We may fall asleep earlier, wake more easily, or get up once or twice a night to use the toilet. That is a normal part of ageing, but it does not mean restful nights are out of reach. A few small habits can make a real difference.
1. Keep a steady routine
Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, weekends included, helps the body keep its natural rhythm.
2. Time your drinks, don't cut them
Staying hydrated matters, especially in Malaysia's heat. Drink well through the day, then ease off in the two hours before bed. Swap evening teh tarik or kopi for warm water or caffeine-free drinks.
3. Make the last toilet trip part of bedtime
Build a bathroom visit into the wind-down routine, right before lights out.
4. Keep the room cool and the path clear
A fan or air-conditioning set to a comfortable temperature helps. Add a soft night-light between the bed and the bathroom so any night-time trips are safe and easy.
5. Stay active during the day
A morning walk, some light stretching or gardening helps the body feel ready for rest at night. Gentle pelvic floor exercises can also support bladder control over time.
6. Choose protection made for the night
Worrying about leaks can keep anyone awake. Overnight protection with high absorbency and a secure fit means the wearer, and their caregiver, can sleep through without interruption. Look for breathable materials that stay comfortable in warm weather, and a snug fit around the legs and waist.
For caregivers, better nights for a loved one often mean better nights for the whole household.
If sleep problems or frequent night-time waking continue, it is worth speaking to a doctor. Many causes are common and very manageable.
Carefree Days, Restful Nights.
