International Day of Older Persons: Celebrating the Generation That Raised Us

Every year on 1 October, the world pauses for the United Nations International Day of Older Persons. It is a day to recognise the wisdom, resilience and everyday contributions of the people who came before us: the parents who worked double shifts, the grandparents who kept family recipes alive, the neighbours who always had an eye on the kids playing outside.

In Malaysia, this day means more every year. Our population is ageing, and the country is on track to become an ageing nation by 2030. That means more families caring for parents at home, more grandparents helping raise grandchildren, and more seniors choosing to stay active, social and independent for longer.

Ageing is something to celebrate

Too often, getting older is talked about as a list of limitations. We see it differently. Growing older brings perspective, patience and a lifetime of stories worth hearing. The goal is not to slow down, but to keep doing the things that matter, with the right support in place.

5 simple ways to honour the older people in your life

  • Ask for their stories. Where did they grow up? What was their first job? Record a voice note or video. These become family treasures.

  • Cook their favourite dish together. Let them teach you the recipe, not just serve it.

  • Plan an outing on their terms. A morning at the pasar, a drive back to the kampung, or kopi at their favourite kedai.

  • Support their independence. Small changes, like better lighting, grab bars or the right everyday products, help them keep doing things for themselves.

  • Just show up. A regular phone call or weekly visit often means more than any gift.

Comfort that keeps up with them

At Aire, we believe getting older should never mean giving up the things you love. That is why our Pull-Up Pants and Tape Diapers are designed around three things: dependable protection, all-day comfort and a secure fit. So whether it is a family gathering, a walk in the park or a good night's sleep, the focus stays on living well.

This International Day of Older Persons, take a moment to say thank you. Their stories are part of ours.
