If you are buying an adult diaper for the first time, whether for yourself or someone you care for, the number of options available can feel overwhelming. Pull-up pants or tape diapers? How much absorbency is enough? What size? Day or night?
Here is everything you need to know to make the right choice, simply and without the guesswork.Â
Step 1: Understand the level of leakage
The most important factor in choosing an adult diaper is how much leakage is happening. Not all incontinence is the same.
Light leakage means small amounts of urine, usually triggered by sneezing, coughing, or laughing. Moderate leakage means larger, more frequent leaks that happen throughout the day. Heavy leakage means significant volume, often unpredictable, or happening overnight.
Matching the product to the level of leakage matters more than most people realise. Using a product with too little absorbency leads to leaks and skin irritation. Using one that is more than needed adds unnecessary bulk and cost. If you are not sure what type of incontinence you or your loved one has, our post on the different types covers this in detail.
Step 2: Choose between pull-up pants and tape diapers
This is the decision most people get stuck on. Here is the simple way to choose:
Pull-up pants are worn like regular underwear. You step into them, pull them up, and remove them by tearing the side seams. They are ideal for people who are mobile, active, or prefer to manage their own care independently. They feel more discreet and more like normal clothing.
Tape diapers fasten at the sides with adjustable tabs that can be refastened multiple times. They are better suited for people with limited mobility, those who need a caregiver to assist with changes, or anyone who needs a more customised fit around the waist and hips.
A simple rule of thumb: if the person can walk to the bathroom independently, pull-up pants are usually the better fit. If they need help with changes or spend more time in bed, tape diapers give caregivers more control and ease.
Aire offers both:
- Aire Adult Pull-up Pants for moderate daily leakage
- Aire Ultra Protection Pull-up Pants for moderate to heavy leakage and overnight use
- Aire Ultra Protection Tape Diapers for heavy leakage, overnight, or caregiver-assisted changes
Step 3: Check the absorbency level
When comparing products, look for one that states absorbency clearly in millilitres or litres. This gives you a concrete number to work with rather than having to guess.
As a general guide, one bathroom trip is around 300ml of urine. Someone with moderate incontinence who has occasional leaks between bathroom visits needs a product that can handle at least 1 to 1.5 litres. For overnight use or heavier leakage, look for at least 2 litres of capacity.
All Aire products clearly state their absorbency in litres. Our standard pull-up pants hold up to 1L, and our Ultra Protection range holds more than 2L, making them suitable for heavy leakage and overnight wear.
Step 4: Get the sizing right
A well-fitting adult diaper prevents leaks far better than any other feature. Too loose and urine escapes through the gaps around the legs. Too tight and it causes discomfort and skin irritation.
Measure the waist and match it to the size chart. If the measurement falls between two sizes, always size up for comfort. For Aire products:
For pull-up pants and Ultra Protection Pull-up Pants:
- S/M: 26 to 34 inches (66 to 86cm)
- L: 34 to 44 inches (89 to 112cm)
- XL: 45 to 63 inches (114 to 163cm)
For Ultra Protection Tape Diapers:
- S/M: 22 to 36 inches (55 to 91cm)
- L: 34 to 46 inches (89 to 117cm)
- XL: 44 to 64 inches (111 to 164cm)

Step 5: Think about skin health
Malaysia's heat and humidity mean that skin health is a serious consideration when choosing an adult diaper. Products that are not breathable trap heat and moisture, which leads to diaper rash and skin irritation especially for elderly users who may have more sensitive skin.
Look for products that are:
- Fully breathable with a cloth-like backsheet
- Latex-free, fragrance-free, and lotion-free
- Made with soft, cottony materials against the skin
Avoid products that feel plasticky or stiff. These tend to cause more sweating and friction. All Aire products are designed specifically with Malaysia's climate in mind.
Step 6: Day use vs overnight use
Day and night have different requirements. During the day, the priority is discretion, comfort, and ease of movement. Overnight, the priority is higher absorbency, longer wear time, and protection from leaks in all sleeping positions.
It is common for people to use a lighter product during the day and switch to a higher absorbency product at night. If nighttime leaks are a concern, our Aire Ultra Protection range with +2L absorbency handles overnight wear well for both pull-up and tape styles.
Step 7: Not sure where to start? Try a free sample first.
Fit and feel can vary between people and between products, and the best way to know is to try it.
Aire offers a free sample pack so you can test the products before committing to a full order. If you are not sure which product to request, our fit calculator takes less than a minute and gives you a personalised recommendation.
